Can a qubit represent an indeterminate state
WebThe result of a measurement of a single qubit in a Bell state is indeterminate, but upon measuring the first qubit in the z-basis, the result of measuring the second qubit is guaranteed to yield the same value (for the Bell states) or the opposite value (for the Bell states). This implies that the measurement outcomes are correlated. The coining of the term qubit is attributed to Benjamin Schumacher. In the acknowledgments of his 1995 paper, Schumacher states that the term qubit was created in jest during a conversation with William Wootters.

While a bit, or binary digit, can have a value either 00 or 11, a qubit can have a value that is either 00, 11 or a quantum superposition of 00 and 11. The state of a single qubit can be described by a two-dimensional column vector of unit norm, that is, the magnitude squared of its entries must sum to 11. This vector, … See more How to represent a qubit being explained, one can gain some intuition for what these states represent by discussing the concept of measurement. WebMar 26, 2024 · The coefficient $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2^3}}$ is the normalization factor: if you have a 3-qubit state that is an equal superposition of 8 basis states, its norm still has to be 1; thus the squared amplitude of each basis state has to be $\frac{1}{8}$, and the amplitude will be square root of that, i.e. exactly $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2^3}}$.
