Do you know if they are failing at a specific point in the workflow or as soon as it is started? You could add in some log to workflow history steps in to try pinpoint where in the workflow it is failing. Keep in mind messages logged to workflow history list have to be less than 256 characters I think as well.

I don't see anything in the ULS on the WFE or the Workflow server. Is there anywhere else I can look to figure out why this workflow doesn't get elevated permissions?
